Being An Eco-Friendly Dog Owner

As many of us are looking for ways to “go green” and make environmentally friendly lifestyle choices for our home and family, let’s not forget our furry four legged friends.  Try these 5 eco-friendly pet owner options:

Adopt a pet. Not only can you save money by adopting a pet but by using the services of local organizations to adopt a dog you can help your community and provide a loving home.   Many chain pet stores are provided pets through qualified breeders; however, many others obtain their dogs for sale from puppy mills.

Go green with the brown. We have all done it, used our plastic shopping bags to clean up doggie doo doo. We may even think it is eco-friendly because we are reusing the bag again.  Actually we are simply make matters worse because plastic shopping bags are not biodegradable so the waste simply sits there in the landfill without breaking down and no one really wins because manufacturers keep making these petroleum based bags.  You can however, purchase and use biodegradable bags to go green and clean.

Speaking of clean and green . . . Use eco-friendly cleaning products like Seventh Generation or better yet make your own cleaners using vinegar, water, lemon juice or baking soda.  These products have no harmful chemicals that your dog may pick up on their paws, lick off their paws or end up sleeping on. Use these helpful cleaning green recipes for your whole house.

Purchase eco-friendly, pet friendly products. The next time you head to the pet store to pick up a chew toy or other item for your dog read the label.  Dog toys are not regulated by the FDA, and that means that they could contain harmful chemicals including formaldehyde, lead and even BPA.  Look for all natural, organic puppy products. Many toys are made from organic cotton or hemp making them safer and healthier for your pet.

Spay or Neuter your pet. Overpopulation is a tremendous problem.  It leads to millions of animals being euthanized each year.  By spaying or neutering your pet you actually maybe helping them live a longer and a healthier life.

Part of being a responsible dog owner is helping man’s best friend to be healthier and by taking this simple and easy steps you can not only be a responsible dog owner but a responsible earth owner.
